Subclinical ketosis is much more common than clinical ketosis, and can therefore cause a greater loss of earnings! It remains undetected without measuring the ketone bodies. Therefore cows should be routinely monitored for subclinical ketosis! The determination of ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the predominant ketone body in the blood, is the GOLD STANDARD diagnostic test for detecting subclinical ketosis.
The measurement of BHB with a meter specially calibrated for cows allows a diagnosis to be made from capillary or venous blood even before clinical ketosis develops with visible signs of disease. Avoiding disease is better than treating already obvious clinical cases!
