Diabetes and sex

Sexual Disorder

many are concerned

Sexual life is influenced by the quality of the partnership, the current state of the psyche and, in addition, it needs functioning sexual organs. Diabetes can affect all these factors to a greater or lesser extent, regardless of gender, and thus disturb a fulfilled sex life.

Women with diabetes are more likely to be affected by infections in the genital and urinary tract area, vaginal dryness and orgasm disorders. Poor blood sugar levels lead to circulatory disorders and nerve damage. This can cause the mucous membranes to swell less well and become poorly moist.

Men with diabetes are more likely to have potency problems, which are known as "erectile dysfunction". Blood circulation is disturbed by deposits in the vessels, and additional nerve damage can make it difficult for the penis to become sensitive. Some medications can also impair erectile function, talk to your doctor about this to switch to an alternative preparation (change the medication only after consulting your doctor!).

In addition, both men and women can experience psychological stress, which in turn has a negative effect on sugar levels and thus indirectly on their sex life. Due to the additional psychological stress in everyday life, people with diabetes can develop depression more often than average.

Whether with diabetes or without, whoever has one of these problems should not hesitate to consult their family doctor or diabetologist. In many areas there are good treatment options that can help. Make sure you have good blood sugar control, a healthy lifestyle and more exercise to actively take care of your health. An appreciative relationship with an honest basis for conversation is a good support on the way to a fulfilled sex life.
